I'm glad you picked up on that, @Joe Kernan. By a handful, I mean 5-6, and by one or two, I mean, well, one or two. They're variations on the same chart in the article.

There's also a variation from year to year in my primary data for Slush companies (mostly manual collection from CrunchBase). Some fit an exponential curve; others fit the classic long tail one (power law).

Here's some more context:

"Last year Horsley Bridge (one of our LPs - investors in a16z's funds) shared some aggregate data with us on just over 7,000 investments made by funds in which it invested, from 1985 to 2014. First, the high level: 6% of deals produced at least a 10x return, and those made up 60% of total returns"
